چکیده

Genetic exchange within one Archaean lineage is a bit like sex in eukaryotes - cells fuse and huge segments of DNA are recombined - with consequences for the spread of adaptations across species.

Endosymbiotic gene transfer from prokaryotic pangenomes: Inherited chimerism in eukaryotes.

Endosymbiotic theory in eukaryotic-cell evolution rests upon a foundation of three cornerstone partners--the plastid (a cyanobacterium), the mitochondrion (a proteobacterium), and its host (an archaeon)--and carries a corollary that, over time, the majority of genes once present in the organelle genomes were relinquished to the chromosomes of the host (endosymbiotic gene transfer). However, not...

Mitochondria, the Cell Cycle, and the Origin of Sex via a Syncytial Eukaryote Common Ancestor

Theories for the origin of sex traditionally start with an asexual mitosing cell and add recombination, thereby deriving meiosis from mitosis. Though sex was clearly present in the eukaryote common ancestor, the order of events linking the origin of sex and the origin of mitosis is unknown. Here, we present an evolutionary inference for the origin of sex starting with a bacterial ancestor of mi...

Horizontal Transfer and Evolution of Prokaryote Transposable Elements in Eukaryotes

Horizontal transfer (HT) of transposable elements (TEs) plays a key role in prokaryotic evolution, and mounting evidence suggests that it has also had an important impact on eukaryotic evolution. Although many prokaryote-to-prokaryote and eukaryote-to-eukaryote HTs of TEs have been characterized, only few cases have been reported between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Here, we carried out a compre...

Progressive Recombination Suppression and Differentiation in Recently Evolved Neo-sex Chromosomes

Recombination suppression leads to the structural and functional differentiation of sex chromosomes and is thus a crucial step in the process of sex chromosome evolution. Despite extensive theoretical work, the exact processes and mechanisms of recombination suppression and differentiation are not well understood. In threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a different sex chromosome s...

Presence of prokaryotic and eukaryotic species in all subgroups of the PP(i)-dependent group II phosphofructokinase protein family.

Inorganic pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase (PP(i)-PFK) of the amitochondriate eukaryote Mastigamoeba balamuthi was sequenced and showed about 60% identity to PP(i)-PFKs from two eubacteria, Propionibacterium freudenreichii and Sinorhizobium meliloti. These gene products represent a newly recognized lineage of PFKs. All four lineages of group II PFKs, as defined by phylogenetic analys...
